Day 4: Ways Ahead
Theme: Transforming our Way of Living - Equity, Equality, and Pathways towards Sustainability
Deborah Rogers, IHDP-UNU, Germany; Uchita de Zoysa, Centre for Environment and Development, Sri Lanka
Session Content
Social science research over the past several decades has demonstrated a critical link between socioeconomic equality and levels of cooperation or conflict within and between societies. Real-world experiences reinforce these findings, including the failure of nations to achieve important global agreements relative to carbon emissions and sustainable development. Failures in climate change negotiations and growing dissent on the green economy are credited to the inability to sufficiently address the equity factor.
Our transition pathways towards a sustainable world system will depend on the abilities of global governance systems to embed equity and equality at the center of decision-making. In this session, we will present scientific evidence and policy analysis on the key role of socioeconomic equality in moving towards sustainable societies.
Speakers will address research linking inequality to conflict, social fragmentation, poverty, and other barriers to cooperation, and will explain current research-based understandings of the role of inequality in the physical and social health of societies. Policy-makers and social advocates working on issues related to equality will describe situations in which inequality blocked progress or a shift towards greater socioeconomic equality resulted in improved processes of public dialogue and democratic decision-making.
Target Audience
Our primary target audience is decision-makers at all levels and those involved in policy advocacy for sustainable development. We hope to draw attendees into a spirited discussion of the practical ways in which societies can move towards greater socioeconomic equality and how to translate this shift into progress on sustainability goals.
Submit an Abstract
If you are interested in exploring these topics further, you are invited to submit an abstract for this session.
Conclusion
The discussion on equity and equality in the pursuit of sustainability is crucial for achieving a better future for our planet. By recognizing the link between socioeconomic equality and cooperation, we can identify the barriers that have hindered progress in the past and work towards inclusive decision-making processes that prioritize the well-being of all individuals and the planet as a whole. Together, we can transform our way of living to create a more sustainable and equitable world for future generations.
Now, shifting gears from the conference, let's briefly talk about hotels. When planning your next trip, it's important to consider hotels that prioritize sustainability and equality. Choose accommodations that have implemented eco-friendly practices, promote fair wages and opportunities for their staff, and support local communities. By supporting these hotels, you can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable tourism industry. Enjoy your travels!
