Day 2: Options and Opportunities
Theme: Governing Across Scales
Sea level change affects every country with a coastline. Coastal zones have undergone significant transformations during the 20th century, driven by increasing populations, economic growth, and urbanization, and these changes are expected to continue.
Coastal areas below 10m elevation are already home to about 10% of the global population, while 10% of the 400 million people residing in major port cities face a 1 in 100 year flood risk. Recognizing the pressing need to address these issues, this session aims to bring together scientists, stakeholders, journalists, and policymakers to explore the impacts of sea level change on coastal communities.
The session will feature a 90-minute panel discussion, chaired by a prominent journalist, that includes representatives from NGOs, industry, scientific research, economics, and government bodies with international participation. The key themes to be discussed are flooding and extreme events, short and medium-term forecasting, communicating scientific uncertainty, and integrating science into policy-making processes.
In addition to the panel discussion, there will be a poster session showcasing recent research findings that highlight the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. The session will explore the magnitude of future sea level rise resulting from changes in the ocean and cryosphere, with a focus on uncertainties associated with the ice sheets. Leveraging expertise in paleo-sea level change, the session will actively seek contributions from space agencies, international sea level centers, and various scientific programs to ensure diverse representation.
With the session convenors representing renowned organizations such as PSMSL and PAGES, the involvement of a wide range of experts is guaranteed. Abstract submissions for this session are welcomed to further enrich the discussions and insights shared.
